IberBlue Wind plans 990-MW floating wind project off Portugal
Wind Energy – Portugal
IberBlue Wind from Spain announced today it is planning to develop a 990-MW floating offshore wind project off the coast of central Portugal.
The Botafogo wind farm will feature 55 wind turbines, each with an individual 18 MW capacity, installed on an area of 359 sq km (138.6 sq mi). The floating turbines will be located 30 to 50 km (18.6-31 mi) off the coast of the Figueira da Foz municipality.
The site is one of the five areas designated by the Portuguese government for offshore renewable energy exploration, due to the strong wind potential, port infrastructure, low impact on other activities in the area and location near the centre of the country where energy demand is higher.
For IberBlue Wind, this is the first floating offshore wind project in Portugal. The company was created in September 2022 as a joint venture (JV) between Irish ocean energy developer Simply Blue Group and Spanish firms Proes Consultores and FF New Energy Ventures.
Its goal is to develop some 2 GW of floating wind projects off the Iberian Peninsula. In November, the JV announced its first offshore wind project, the 990-MW Nao Victoria off the Spanish coast.
