Launch of revisited Federal Hydrogen Strategy in Antwerp

Energy Disrupter

General – Hydrogen

Today was the launch of the revisited Federal Hydrogen Strategy in Antwerp.

Belgium has the ambition to become a major hydrogen hub in Europe. Strong focus on infrastructure, hydrogen (and derivatives) import, modest volumes of local production and cross border cooperation.

That perfectly fits the hydrogen strategy of the cross border industry cluster at North Sea Port, being the largest hydrogen hub in the Benelux region.

North Sea Port is the 60-kilometre-long cross-border port area that stretches from Vlissingen on the North Sea coast in the Netherlands, some 32 kilometres inland to Ghent in Belgium.

Hydrogen will play an increasing role in making the industry and transport sector in and around North Sea Port more sustainable. The prominent presence of local hydrogen production and consumption will also attract innovative, new players. Also sustainable hydrogen produced in other parts of the world will be imported via North Sea Port.

North Sea Port is centrally located in important pipeline corridors in both Belgium and the Netherlands, and its location at the estuary of the Western Scheldt also makes it a promising hub for bunkering sustainable fuels. In combination with large scale local demand and sustainable production, good availability of space, landings of offshore wind power and the presence of deep sea port facilities, this will lay the foundation for North Sea Port as a hydrogen hub on a European scale.
