Siemens Gamesa claims wind turbine world record
Its SG 14-222 DD prototype turbine at the Østerild test site in Denmark produced 359MWh – enough power to drive 1.8 million km in a mid-sized electric car – in a 24-hour period, the European manufacturer claimed.
The turbine has a nameplate capacity of 14MW. However, it has a power boost mode that can increase output up to 15MW.
Between 12.30pm on 6 October and 12.30pm on 7 October it was able to run for 24 hours with an average output of 14.95MW – producing 359MWh – a Siemens Gamesa spokeswoman explained.
The power utility company at the test site verified the power production figures, the turbine maker stated.
Siemens Gamesa has received orders – both firm orders and preferred supplier agreements – to supply its flagship offshore wind turbine for projects off the UK, Taiwan and the US.
It plans to begin full market deployment from 2024.
