Energy Efficient Tips to Carry You into Fall – Powerlines – seattle.gov
It’s Energy Efficiency Day – what better time to shine a spotlight on energy saving tips to help you keep your home operating smoothly and efficiently as we head into the cooler months.
Make the switch to LED
Turning off lights that aren’t in use is an easy and cost-effective way to conserve energy. Take your efficiency to the next level by switching to new LED light bulbs and replacing traditional incandescent bulbs. LED light bulbs cost less to operate, last longer and produce less heat.
Replace air filters
Cooler temps will be upon us in no time. Before you turn on your home heating system, spend a few minutes on routine maintenance that will save you time and improve air quality in your home. Air filters accumulate dust and dirt that can cause your system to work harder. Routinely changing your air filter will help improve your air quality and keep your heating system working more efficiently.
Keep out cold air
Seal cracks, leaks and drafts around window and door frames before the weather turns cold. The use of weatherstripping and caulking to keep cold air out and heat from escaping helps save money on heating bills.
Program your thermostat
Find a temperature that keeps your home comfortable without running your heating system frequently and using extra power. It is recommended to set your thermostat a few degrees cooler while you are away and adjust it back to your preferred comfortable temperature when you return for optimal energy savings.
Turn it off
Electronics left plugged in when not being used can be huge energy wasters. They might seem insignificant but when you add them all up, they can be a huge drain on your wallet.
Wash smart
Washing your clothes on cold is not only good for saving energy but it’s great for helping to slow fading and shrinking as well. Running full loads ups the efficiency of each load. If you really want to save energy, skip the dryer entirely and go for air drying.
