State Of Global Waste This 2022 🌏🗑️
Global Waste 🌏🗑️: What is the state of waste worldwide this 2022? Are we getting better at dealing with our waste or are we growing worse as time passes by? Let us take a look at the data and statistics in this blog. Of course, and as always, we suggest that you read this blog to learn more.
It’s definitely not getting better – that’s for sure. Unfortunately, the amount of global waste steadily grows year after year. And, it will only continue to get worse if we don’t do something about it.
The world, as it is today, generates around 2.01 billion tonnes of MSW, or municipal solid waste, yearly. Alarming and downright scary, right?
What is more alarming and scarier than this, however, is that global waste is expected to grow to 3.4 billion tonnes by 2050. Imagine that amount of waste. How would the humans of the future fare?
If we do not do anything about it, then waste will inevitably ruin the world.
There are various reasons/factors for this. And of course, with increased efforts in tackling waste, we have the ability to reduce this. Below, we talk about all of this and more, so we expect that you stay to read our blog to learn more.

Now, on to the global waste state and trends of 2022!
Global waste state and trends
As we already mentioned countless times through our different blogs including this one, global waste continues to pile up year by year – only gaining an upward trend.
The biggest global waste contributor in the world, currently, is the United States of America. To give you a clue on how ‘wasteful’ the US is, did you know that each American produces an astounding 809-811 (around 1,780 lbs) of waste each year? With a population of more than 335 million this 2022, that makes their individual waste generation quite alarming,
Only half of an individual American’s waste ends up in landfill. In addition, of the more than 800 kgs of waste produced by a single American, 95 kgs are incinerated. A single American now produces 2 kgs more waste today this 2022 than they did in 2019.
Considering waste production on a global scale, the United States is followed by other industrialised countries such as Denmark, New Zealand, Canada and Switzerland based on average annual per capita municipal waste generation.
How does Australia fare?
What about Australia? How does Australia fare with the countries mentioned above in terms of waste production?
Although not as much as the United States, statistics state that Australia still produces around 78 million tonnes of municipal solid waste each year. Only 29 per cent (22.6 million tonnes) of the 78 million goes straight to landfill whilst only half of it makes its way into recycling facilities.
Additionally, an average Aussie citizen produces over half a tonne (or 540 kgs) of rubbish each year.
How to reduce global waste in the coming years
To solve the current global waste problem, we have to get to the root. In other words, we have to determine the reasons why there even is a non-stop growing global waste problem in the first place.
There are a number of factors to consider. Population size and growth is the first example. Obviously, the more people there is the more waste that gets produced. Factor in the rapid population boom we have experienced in recent years, and you are looking at countless amounts of waste that will only increase in the near future.
Urbanisation also plays a significant role in increasing global waste production. As ‘concrete jungles’ (New York City reference) are born, so is more waste. People there mostly rely on plastic-packaged food and goods to survive and thrive. Moreover, the number of vehicles there produces enough greenhouse gases to consider cities as lacking in environmental friendliness.
Lastly, the example of factors is economic growth. Although we consider economic growth good, we should also know the fact that a better economy produces more waste. Economic growth means an increase in goods and services, and an increase in goods and services means, of course, an increase in waste generation as a result of the said goods and services.
To counter the increasing global waste, Visual Capitalist’s Bruno Vendetti explains below in this infographic by Northstar Clean Technologies. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please click the picture to expand the image. Or, you could click the link here to expand the image and learn how to fight global waste.
