Geothermal greenhouse complex in Dikili, Turkiye holds groundbreaking ceremony
A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the 3-million square meter geothermal greenhouse complex in the Dikili district of Izmir, Turkiye.
The groundbreaking ceremony of the geothermal heated greenhouse to be put into operation in the Dikili district of Izmir, Turkiye was held with the participation of the 28th Term Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) President Binali Yildirim and the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Prof Dr Vahit Kirisci.
The facility, which will operate on a total area of 3 million 29 thousand square meters, will be the largest geothermal heated Agriculture-Based Specialized Greenhouse Organized Industrial Zone (TDIOSB) in Europe and Turkey. We had previously reported on the plans to drill 7 geothermal wells for this project.
The project, whose total investment amount will reach 5 billion TL when completed, will contribute 1.6 billion TL annually to the national economy when fully operational.
In this area, 50 high-tech greenhouses with a minimum of 25 decares of geothermal energy heating, 35 industrial facilities where the produced products will be processed, packaged and stored, a Greenhouse Training Center and an R&D centre will be established.
80 thousand tons of products will be obtained annually from the said area. It is planned to employ 3,500 people, 90 per cent of whom are women, in the region.
The project will be implemented with the cooperation of the Izmir Governor’s Office, Izmir Chamber of Commerce, Aegean Region Chamber of Industry, Izmir Commodity Exchange, Aegean Exporters’ Associations, Dikili Municipality and Bergama Chamber of Commerce.
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Vahit Kirisci, said: “As a country, we are not a rich country in terms of water. If we exclude the Black Sea Region, we can say that we are poor in water in the rest of our country. When you look at the national average, we are among the countries with water problems, with an average annual precipitation of 574 millimetres. Assuming that the world average is around 1000 millimetres, we need to see this situation. Secondly, we have a serious foreign dependency in terms of underground resources, especially in terms of basic inputs such as fuel and fertilizer, but there is a situation that gives us relief in terms of geothermal.”
Binali Yildirim, Speaker of the 28th Term Parliament, said, “This was barren, marginal land. One-third of them were also set as tourism recreation facilities. This allocation was abolished and this area was registered as an agricultural specialization OIZ and it came to the point where the foundation was laid. I would like to announce another beautiful project. Izmir is an important city that increases its importance not only in trade, industry, education, and tourism but also in agriculture. Agriculture 4.0 is emerging as a new concept. This business, on which we laid the foundation today, is a work of this nature. With the realization of this place, our agricultural exports will increase. We will realize important innovations in terms of agricultural technologies and increasing added value in agriculture.
