Deme and Havfram join forces for Norwegian offshore wind

Energy Disrupter

The two companies plan to offer transport and installation services for foundations, cables, wind turbines and substations for wind farms featuring both fixed-bottom foundations and floating platforms.

Norway aims to have allocated sites capable of supporting 30GW of offshore wind capacity by 2040. It has no operational commercial-scale projects.

However, Norway is expected to hold its first seabed lease auction for projects using floating platforms at Utsira Nord and fixed-bottom foundations at Sørlige Nordsjø II – in the coming months.

Jeff Van Hout, business unit manager at Belgian contractor Deme Offshore, said: “For the Sørlige Nordsjø II project, which is to be installed in relatively deep water depths of more than 60 metres, we believe it will be important to involve an experienced contractor early in the development process to select the best foundation concept for example.

“With our vast experience in monopile, pre-piled jackets and suction pile technology we look forward to engaging with developers and seeing how we can best bring our innovative solutions and add value to their project.”

Several bidding partnerships have been formed to compete on Utsira Nord, including Iberdrola, TotalEnergies and Norsk Havvind, RWE, NTE and Havfram, Shell, BKK and Lyse, Ørsted, Hafslund Eco and Fred Olsen Renewables, Equinor and Vårgrønn – a joint venture of energy companies Eni and HitecVision – and a joint venture formed by Norwegian renewables developer Magnora and UK engineering firm TechnipFMC.

Meanwhile, trios of BP, Statkraft and Aker Offshore Wind, Equinor, RWE Renewables and Hydro REIN,  Statkraft, Aker Offshore Wind and Aker Horizons, Ørsted, Hafslund Eco and Fred Olsen Renewables, Iberdrola, TotalEnergies and Norsk Havvind and Shell, BKK and Lyse are all targeting offshore wind development in Sølige Nordsjø II.

Additionally, Deme Offshore and Havfram see electrification of Norway’s existing oil and gas platforms as a “necessary step in the energy transition”, which will further boost demand for offshore wind energy.
