The planned 40-MW Ulumbu geothermal plant by PT PLN will generate power through steam from 5 production well areas.
Indonesia state-owned utility company PT PLN (Persero) has announced plans of building a 40-MW geothermal power plant in the Ulumbu geothermal area in the Manggarai Regency in Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Indonesia.
The power plant will be utilizing steam from 5 production well areas and brine will be reinjected to 2 reinjection wells. The PLN General Manager of Nusa Tenggara Development Unit, Wahidin, mentioned that preparation efforts had already begun. These include socialization with indigenous peoples in several villages within or near the project, namely Lungar, Mocok, Wewo, and Go Muntas.
“The construction of the Ulumbu PLTP is a step by PLN to support the energy transition towards sustainable green energy use in Indonesia,” said Wahidin. This is inline with the Indonesian Government’s goal of having 23% of new and renewable energy in the national energy mix by 2025.
Ulumbu is one of six sites that are expected to the help the Flores Island build up to 115 MW of additional geothermal power generation capacity by 2028. Earlier this year, PT PLN issued an invitation for interested parties for well targeting in the development of the Ulumbu and Mataloko projects.
