Vestas eyes Danish offshore tests for 15MW wind turbine with European Energy

Vestas is aiming to test its 15MW turbines in an offshore environment  off the coast of Frederikshavn, north-east Denmark.

It plans to install three of its V236-15.0MW turbines at three of the five test sites that European Energy is developing approximately 4km off the coast of Frederikshavn.

Turbine maker Vestas unveiled its 15MW turbine last February. It is currently producing the first prototype and aims to install it at the Danish onshore test centre in Østerild later this year.

However, Vestas explained that it is important to be able to construct and test the wind turbine in an offshore environment as well. This will help to prove the viability of the technology in an offshore environment and help the company understand how to safely and effectively install the turbine, the Danish firm added.

Frederikshavn’s city council approved development of the offshore wind test site in 2018. Since then, European Energy has been working on the environmental impact assessments. The Danish Energy Agency has approved these assessments and is due to submit them for public consultation later this month.

Vestas and European Energy aim to complete the project in 2024.
