LG taps Eaton to enable flexible home energy management – Smart Energy
LG Electronics is to integrate Eaton’s intelligent power management technology with its energy management solutions.
Technologies from Eaton include its smart breakers and electric vehicle chargers, which will be integrated with the LG ThinQ Energy mobile smart home app and LG energy management solutions.
The aim is to simplify load management in the home and open the way for users to become energy prosumers.
Matt Alexander, vice president of marketing for Eaton’s Commercial and Residential Distribution Solutions division, says that the company’s smart breakers are a foundational element of its ‘Home as a Grid’ approach to its technology offerings for the management and monitoring of energy use.
“By integrating this technology with the LG ThinQ Energy app, we are delivering capabilities that can enable a future where homes become both users and producers of energy.”

The technology integration is to be demonstrated in a residential virtual power plant pilot due to launch later in the Spring in partnership with VPP platform provider Sunverge Energy with Pacific Gas & Electric customers in northern and central California.
Approximately 100 homes are expected to participate in the project, which will combine holistic load control capabilities with solar PV and energy storage orchestration to explore the aggregation of these resources as dynamic VPPs.
Stephen Hahm, energy vice president of LG Electronics USA adds that the company’s vision of a distributed clean energy future for American consumers aligns with Eaton’s Home as a Grid approach.
“Our complementary technologies will make it easier for homeowners to manage and monitor loads from renewables while creating new opportunities to save energy and reduce their home’s carbon footprint,” he promises.
The LG ThinQ app is designed to enable the management of all LG ThinQ smart home devices and appliances in one place. LG ThinQ is an artificial intelligence-based technology to manage and ‘personalise’ the home and lifestyle therein.
