DHHS encourages Nebraskans to sign up for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program – KLKN

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – As temperatures continue to fall, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) encourages Nebraskans at risk of defaulting on heating payments to apply for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

LIHEAP, a federally funded program that provides financial assistance to offset the costs of heating and cooling to lower-income households, began on Oct. 1 and is currently in its heating season.

During this time, eligible Nebraskans can receive financial assistance for utility bills through one-time direct payments to utility providers.

Trained DHHS staff are available to walk applicants through all of the services provided by LIHEAP.

Those who have previously participated in the program should have received a notification about their continued eligibility, while those who did not should contact ACCESSNebraska to have their eligibility determined. There are no penalties for applying or being denied if you do not qualify.

LIHEAP aid is 100% financed with federal funds. A total of $72,585,884 in LIHEAP federal funds are available for the federal fiscal year 2022.
