Simply Cups And 7-Eleven Recycling ☕
Simply Cups And 7-Eleven Recycling ☕: In this blog, we talk about Simply Cups and 7-Eleven’s collaboration efforts to deal with the growing amount of coffee cup waste going into landfill. Make sure to read on to learn more.
I kid you not when I say that ‘a cuppa’ or coffee in the morning can make or break my day, depending on whether I take it or not. Needless to say, I need my fix every single day to function like a normal being. I can’t help it – I just love coffee so much! A lot of people aside from me do, too.
Now, I have been receiving question about coffee cups’ environmental impact and recyclability, much like my friend Aodhan did on his blog tackling coffee cup’s, pod’s etc. recyclability. The answers to the question are as follows:
- Do coffee cups have much of an environmental impact? Answer: Yes, they do. In fact, every 30 minutes or half an hour, Australians throw out 50,000 cups. As a result, more than 1 billion cups get thrown out every year.
- Are coffee cups recyclable? Answer: Yes, you can recycle coffee cups. However, recycling options are pretty much limited at the moment even in 2021.
Simply Cups and 7-Eleven’s recycling efforts
From the 2nd question, we can conclude that lots of coffee cups still make their way to landfill because of limited recycling options. As a result, certain organisations have stepped up to tackle this problem faced by Australia. Simply Cups is a forefront example, being the largest cup recycling program in Australia and even collaborating with known convenience store and/or brand 7-Eleven and the University of Newcastle.
Below, we cover everything that you need to know about the recycling program of Simply Cups in collaboration with 7-Eleven. We will also tackle Simply Cup’s joint venture with the University of Newcastle on recycling coffee cups, as already mentioned above.

Simply Cups recycling program with 7-Eleven
To start, we will talk about Simply Cups.
Simply Cups is Australia’s first coffee cup recycling program. Businesses and schools alike now have what it takes to ‘close the loop’ (check our blog on circular economy for more information) and prevent tonnes and tonnes of coffee cup waste from going into landfills.
Most notably, the Simply Cups recycling program aims to help their partners segregate coffee cups from other waste streams. They also collect the coffee cups and process them with the use of the latest, state-of-the-art technologies capable of creating new, high-quality products coming from the coffee cups.
Currently, you can recycle your takeaway coffee cups at participating 7-Eleven stores, the Simply Cups recycling program’s partner, across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia.
Recycling process
The process itself is simple.
First step is to get and place a cup collection unit, which you can order from Simply Cups. All collection points should have dedicated Cup Collection Unit. Simply Cups provide a wide range of units which can cater to a business’s or a school’s needs. Choices include the following:
- Single Tube
- Double Tube
- Triple Tube
- Triple Tube with Liquids
- Jumbo Cup Unit
You can enquire at Simply Cups’s website for more information. Take note that to keep the program flowing smoothly without a hitch, they can only collect cups from cup collection units with Simply Cups branding. Additionally, the units can accept a variety of cup sizes, ranging from 4oz to 16oz. For larger cups, contact Simply Cups.
After collecting enough cups, simply tie off the sleeve or bag liner that comes with the cup collection unit. Place them into the Simply Cups bin for collection. As mentioned above, the cups are transformed into another product of higher value. Watch how they process the waste below:

The University of Newcastle
Aside from 7-Eleven, Simply Cups has also partnered with the University of Newcastle in recycling coffee cups and diverting them from landfill.
According to their research in their grounds, 3 per cent of general waste and 2 per cent of recycling come from coffee cups. They are aiming to increase their recycling target to 70 per cent this 2021 as set out in their Environmental Sustainability Plan 2019 – 2025 through implementing a range of waste recycling programs.
One such program is their collaboration with Simply Cups to recycle disposable coffee cups, thereby diverting them from landfill. These cups are turned into the rCup: the world’s first reusable coffee cup made from recycled coffee cups. In addition, they can also be made into other products.

Simply Cups and 7-Eleven recycling: final thoughts
We wish this recycling program success. As a coffee lover myself, it is nice to know that an organisation out there can deal with our takeaway coffee cup waste, albeit with a little help from us, of course. We have to be responsible with our coffee cup waste and recycle them should an option be available to us. Or, we could use our own reusable cups whenever and wherever possible.
