As part of the regular IGC Webinar series – a partnership of Enerchange and ThinkGeoEnergy – we are proud to host presenter Bastian Hermant of TLS Geothermie in France, who will speak about  “Magnetotelluric exploration of a crustal fault zone geothermal system in the French Massif Central.

Geothermal energy has an essential role to play in the energy transition, especially thanks to its large potential on a global scale. However, this potential is often underestimated as exploration typically focuses on surface manifestations and data from oil & gas exploration. To detect blind systems, which probably represent the majority of exploitable geothermal systems, explorers must therefore conceptualize favorable geothermal systems characterized by a set of parameters explaining the emergence of the resource.

TLS Geothermics has therefore developed the concept of a crustal fault geothermal system: the natural permeability of fault zones allows the establishment of fluid convection in the crust. These convections allow temperature anomalies at shallow depths but also the large flows necessary for the production of energy.

To explore this type of system in basement areas such as the French Massif Central, certain geophysical methods are more suitable. This is the case with magnetotellurics, which makes it possible to build a 3D model of rock conductivity to detect potential areas of fluid circulation or hydrothermal alteration. This tool is an integral part of the exploration process of the GEOPULSE project (www.geopulse.fr) of which the results will be presented.
