SSE Renewables combines Scottish offshore wind farms into 4.1GW mega-project

SSE Renewables has combined two proposed Scottish offshore wind farms to create an up to 4.1GW project off the country’s east coast.

Alex Meredith, SSE Renewables’ project director for Berwick Bank explained that combining the individual Berwick Bank and Marr Bank wind farms – formerly known as Seagreen 2 and 3 – will accelerate project development.

He added that the developer plans to use as many local suppliers as possible throughout development, construction and operation.

The project is due to be located beyond the Firth of Forth off the east coast of Scotland.

SSE plans to file a planning application to government agency Marine Scotland and local council next year. It had secured leases for the site in 2010.

The developer would need further permitting approval for the project from the Scottish government before starting construction.

SSE has previously developed the 588MW Beatrice Beatrice (588MW) OffshoreOuter Moray Firth, Scotland, UK, Europe Click to see full details project alongside CIP, and is also working on the 1GW-plus Seagreen 1 wind farm in the Firth of Forth – close to the Berwick Bank development site.

Berwick Bank would be among the world’s largest offshore wind farms, with Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly recording only seven offshore wind farms larger than 4.1GW.
