Siemens Gamesa boosts SG 5.X-170 onshore wind turbine to 6.6MW
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy (SGRE) has upgraded the 170-metre rotor variant of its 5.X onshore wind platform to have a power rating of 6.6MW.
It had previously offered the SG 5.X-170 with a flexible power rating up to 6.2MW, and already offered its 155-metre rotor model with a rating up to 6.6MW.
The European turbine manufacturer explained that the higher power rating would help decrease the levelised cost of energy (LCoE) in all wind conditions.
Since launching the 5.X platform in 2019, Siemens Gamesa has received nearly 3GW of orders for the two turbines.
Prototypes for the SG 6.6-155 and SG 6.6-170 turbines are operational and being tested in Alaiz, Spain and Hovsore, Denmark, respectively.
Several other wind turbine manufacturers – including Vestas, MingYang Smart Energy, GE Renewable Energy and, most recently, Nordex – now offer onshore models with power ratings of at least 6MW.
