South African wind industry mourns death of Ntombi Ntuli

South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA) CEO Ntombifuthi Ntuli has died.

She leaves behind two young children and an extended family.

Known as Ntombi, she was appointed as the head of the SAWEA in September 2019.

During her tenure, South Africa made plans to award contracts to 14.4GW of new wind power capacity due to be installed between 2022 and 2030 – more than any other energy source in this period.

And last year, the country’s Supreme Court of Appeal rejected a legal challenge against state utility Eskom signing power purchase agreements with operators of 2.3GW of renewables projects successful in the country’s fourth tender round in 2018. SAWEA had helped the defense in the case.

A fifth tender round is currently ongoing, with a deadline of later this month.

“Ntombi changed the face of the wind industry in our country,” said Mercia Grimbeek, SAWEA chair. 

“She made the industry relatable with her ability to engage with the most stubborn naysayer, helping them to see her point of view and winning everyone over with her charming smile and her calm strength.”
