Wpd enters Vietnamese wind market with 103.5MW project

German developer Wpd has entered the Vietnamese wind market with an agreement to co-develop a 103.5MW project in the central highlands region of the country.

It will develop the 103.5MW Kon Plông Kon Plông (103.5MW) OnshoreKon Tum Province, Vietnam, Asia-Pacific Click to see full details onshore wind farm alongside Singaporean developer Levanta Renewables, and also plans to expand its project pipeline in the region.

The project is located in Kon Tum province, about 780km south-east of the capital Hanoi, and near the border with Laos and Cambodia to the west.

No date has been given for when the wind farm could be commissioned, or what turbines might be used, but Wpd believes construction could start as early as 2022.

Levanta has already carried out wind measurements, which have confirmed attractive resources at the site in the central highlands.

The project is included in Vietnam’s last power development plan (PDP7) and is therefore well-positioned to receive support for further development steps from the central government.

The German developer also plans to expand its project pipeline in Vietnam and the wider Asia Pacific region, it added.

Wpd plans to focus on both onshore and offshore wind farms through co-operations with other developers.

The developer is already working on project development in Asia Pacific through both onshore and offshore wind farms. It has helped to develop 27.6MW of operational onshore wind capacity in Taiwan and is involved in a further 106.2MW of onshore wind and 990MW of offshore wind in the same country, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.
