Saipem launches pan-renewables hydrogen solution

Italian engineering firm Saipem has announced the launch of a technological solution for the production of green hydrogen from renewable energy sources such as floating wind, floating solar and marine energy in a single system. 

The SUISO system, which is registered for trademark with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), aims to power electrolysers installed on existing offshore platforms for the production of green hydrogen. 

“The technology responds to the growing demand for green hydrogen production and, at the same time, allows the conversion of oil and gas offshore facilities which have now reached the end of their lifecycle,” the company said in a statement. “The oxygen resulting from this process can be used in various areas such as aquaculture or seaweed production.”

“The solution is adaptable to the changing characteristics of the marine sites and to the different production needs,” said Saipem’s chief executive, Francesco Caio.

Saipem recently acquired the floating offshore wind business of French company Naval Energies, signalling its intention to participate in France’s floating offshore wind tender.
