Ocean Winds and Aker Offshore team up for Scottish tender

The Ocean Winds joint venture of EDP Renewables and Engie is teaming up with Aker Offshore Wind to develop floating offshore wind off Scotland.

The partners plan to enter the ongoing ScotWind leasing round, which seabed landlord the Crown Estate Scotland believes could see leases awarded for sites capable of supporting up to 10GW of capacity.

They are already teaming up for floating offshore wind developments off California and South Korea.

In Scotland they will face heavy competition.

Trios of TotalEnergies, the Green Investment Group and the Renewable Infrastructure Development Group and Ørsted, Falck Renewables and BlueFloat Energy, pairings of Vattenfall and Fred Olsen Renewables, BP and German utility EnBW and Simply Blue Energy and Subsea 7, as well as Ideol and Aker Solutions, have also all announced their intention to bid.

Aker Offshore Wind highlighted Scotland as a target market ahead of its spin-off as a separate entity from the wider Aker company.

It aims to use its 47% stake in floating offshore wind platform manufacturer Principle Power to help develop offshore wind sites in deep waters.

Meanwhile, Ocean Winds is helping to develop more than 1.8GW of offshore wind off Scotland, according to Windpower Intelligence, the research and data division of Windpower Monthly.
