China’s first floating wind turbine ready for installation

MingYang has assembled the 5.5MW turbine for China’s first floating offshore wind demonstration project.

Its MySE5.5MW typhoon-resistant floating wind turbine will have a 158-metre rotor diameter and will be installed on a semi-submersible platform.

China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG) will own and operate the pilot project.

It will be located close to other offshore wind farms CTG has developed off Yangjiang City in the country’s southern Guangdong province.

MingYang stated that it has developed an “advanced floater movement control strategy” to enable the turbine to adapt to the wind, waves and currents in the South China Sea. 

However, it would not explain what this is due to confidentiality agreements.

The turbine manufacturer stated that it believes the first floating wind project in China will pave the way for more wind farms in both shallow and deep waters.

Large floating offshore wind farms are currently being developed in European waters, following years of small demonstration projects.

The MingYang pilot will be China’s first pilot floating offshore wind turbine.
