Engineering award of Hell’s Kitchen geothermal project
Engineering group Hatch has received a surprise Impressive International Project Award for the Hell’s Kitchen geothermal project in the Salton Sea, California.
Canadian engineering group Hatch has received an Ontario Engineering Project Award from the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies in Ontario, Canada. In a surprise announcement, the Hell’s Kitchen Geothermal Power and Lithium Extraction Facility was awarded in the Impressive International Project category—a category created this year because judges were so impressed with the project and felt it needed recognition.
“Among the many great entries this year to the Ontario Engineering Project Awards was a submission by Hatch for the Hell’s Kitchen Geothermal Power and Lithium Extraction Facility. The geothermal energy would be captured and used to extract lithium from the earth, an important element in today’s society. The judges were clearly impressed, and we have awarded it the Impressive International Project Award,” said John F. Thompson, 2021 OEPA judge.
For the Hell’s Kitchen Geothermal Power and Lithium Extraction Facility, Hatch provided engineering services to Controlled Thermal Resources (CTR) for the development of a high-temperature flash steam geothermal power plant that will integrate with a lithium extraction facility in the Salton Sea Region in California. By combining direct lithium extraction with renewable geothermal power, CTR can deliver one of the most sustainable, battery-grade lithium products in the world today. Hatch designed a flowsheet incorporating proprietary selective lithium extraction technology from geothermal brine while adhering to stringent environmental regulations.
“We’re very proud of our partnership with Controlled Thermal Resources in developing and deploying state-of-the-art technology for lithium extraction from geothermal brine, powered completely from geothermal energy and we’re ecstatic that the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies – Ontario has recognized our team with this newly created award,” said Adel Muna, Hatch’s global director, Thermal Power and project sponsor for the Hell’s Kitchen Geothermal Power and Lithium Extraction Facility project.
