GE’s Haliade-X cleared for markets in typhoon zones

GE has received typhoon certification from DNV, for its Haliade-X offshore wind turbine.

It means the 12-13MW machine may be safely deployed in Asia and the US. It will need a separate certficiation for the 14MW turbine.

“Typhoon loads on wind turbines is of critical importance in emerging offshore wind markets such as Taiwan, Japan, Korea as well as parts of the United States,” explained Kim Sandgaard-Mørk, executive vice president for renewables certification at DNV.

“Wind turbines need to be designed for these extreme local environmental conditions to support the ambitious plans to develop multi-megawatt offshore wind projects.”

To date, GE has received 5.5GW of firm orders or preferred supplier agreements for its Haliade-X turbine, with a variety of power ratings specified.

It has secured firm orders for 3.6GW of 13-14MW machines in the UK and has 1.9GW of preferred supplier agreements in place, for 12MW turbines in the U.S.

GE has yet to receive any Asian orders for the Haliade-X, but it is building a turbine factory in Jieyang, China.
